Who We Are

You may or may not have heard of the churches of Christ. If you have, it is likely you know them as the group that "thinks they are the only ones going to heaven." Or, you may know them as the "odd ones" who do not use instruments of music in worship. Regardless of your impression of the churches of Christ, we ask you to consider the following, as we explain who we are at the Hebron Lane church of Christ.

We Are Not A Denomination

The Hebron Lane church of Christ is independent from all other churches. Just as the New Testament (NT) teaches, we have elders who oversee the congregation (Acts 14:32; 20:28). These men are also described as shepherds (pastors) and bishops (overseers) in the Bible (1 Peter 5:1-4; Titus 1:5-7). As Peter and Paul commanded elders in the first century, the elders here tend to the flock among them, not elsewhere (Acts 20:17, 28; 1 Peter 5:1-4).

We do not have ties to any association, convention, or organization. Our work is solely funded by voluntary contributions of our members (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:6, 7). We do not seek money from any individual or group outside of this church.

We Believe In New Testament Christianity

Too many churches, including some "churches of Christ" have strayed away from what the NT teaches. We strive to adhere to the Word of God in word and deed (Colossians 3:17). Therefore, we take the Bible alone as our rule of faith and practice (1 Peter 4:11). It is the inspired, authoritative revelation of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). As such, it contains "all things that pertain to life and godliness" (2 Peter 1:3).

What You Can Expect

Worship Services

We gather each week to worship God and encourage one another (Hebrews 10:24-25). On Sundays we follow the reverent, simple, sincere pattern of NT Christians. Therefore, we do the following:

  • Give back to the Lord (1 Corinthians 16:1-2).
  • Remember our Savior's death in the Lord's Supper (Matthew 26:26-29; Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29).
  • Pray (Acts 2:42; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; 1 Timothy 2:1-4).
  • Sing (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).
  • Preach the Word (Acts 2:42; 20:7; 2 Timothy 4:2).

As you can see, we base each activity on Scripture. We do not seek to entertain or to stir people into an emotional frenzy. Rather, we seek to honor God and point men toward heaven. This includes addressing the problem of sin and exhorting men to submit to the Savior (Romans 3:23; Hebrews 5:9). We simply trust in the gospel as God's power unto salvation (Romans 1:16).

Bible Studies

The Hebron Lane church of Christ provides Bible classes twice each week for its members and any others who wish to attend. This is part of the church's work of edifying itself in love (Ephesians 4:11-16). The classes are designed to increase our knowledge of God's will (2 Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 2:2).

Other Classes

We offer special classes each winter. The topics studied vary from year to year, but are always helpful to those who attend.

In-home studies are conducted with members and non-members alike. Anyone who is willing to study is welcome to contact us to set up a convenient time to study God's word. We have material designed for all levels of knowledge and understanding of the Bible. The studies usually start out with basics, including religious authority, God's plan of saving man, and the church. They can progress into a deeper investigation of the Scripture.

Materials

The Hebron Lane church of Christ keeps a multitude of materials on hand that cover a wide range of topics. They are offered free of charge to anyone who wants them.

Sirs, What Must I Do To Be Saved?

You must hear the gospel, God's power unto salvation (Romans 1:16; 1 Peter 1:22-25; James 1:18, 21). "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17).

You must believe Jesus is the Christ (John 3:16; Hebrews 11:6). "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins" (John 8:24).

You must confess Jesus as the Christ (Luke 12:8, 9; Acts 8:36-38). "For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Romans 10:10).

You must repent of your sins (Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38). "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19).

You must be baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21). "And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord" (Acts 22:16).

When you follow the gospel plan of salvation, the Lord will add you to His body, the church (Acts 2:38-47; Ephesians 1:22, 23; 2:16).
